Owing to the mobile extension feature hotel phone systems can also integrate public mobile phones using GSM networks.

One of the drawbacks of today’s communications solutions is that public phone network subscribers – especially those with a mobile phone – are not (or just marginally) connected to the internal hotel phone network. Thereby the authorisation management of mobile handsets, the processing of call fees, call forwarding and other functions require separate paperwork and so the operation of these units cannot be controlled effectively.

When a call is received from a public mobile or landline network, this call is not part of the hotel’s phone traffic, which means none of the advanced features of the PBX can be used, which has a negative effect on their efficiency.

If the call was forwarded to a mobile handset, there is no control anymore over such call, so in-call features such as call monitoring and recalling are completely unavailable.

Using the mobile extension feature any public GSM or landline phone can be used as a fully functional extension of various hotel phone systems. This includes, apart from simple call forwarding, the full set of PBX features, such as call transfer to landline or mobile extensions, automatic redialling, call switching, conference calls, customisable user profiles, and the use of CTI (Computer-Telephony Integration) applications etc. Users of mobile extensions are not linked to one specific, pre-defined terminal, and – to support users who really need to be mobile – the subscriber can have more than one public call numbers.
